You give Schneider too much credit. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory developed the inflatable TransHab module configuration c. 1986 as part of its Great Exploration scenario. It put the concept forward as an alternative to NASA's 90-Day Study scenario during the Space Exploration Initiative (1989-1993). NASA felt threatened, so cast aspersions on inflatables, then "invented" the concept itself once LLNL was safely out of SEI. There were earlier inflatable module designs, too - going back to the 1950s at least.
